Australian Populist Movement
Brief description
The red Eureka symbol from the masthead of Stockade
The Australian Populist Movement was formed in Perth in December 1984; however, no branches were formed in any other Australian states. The APM had formed from a split of members from National Action in Perth (at that time, under the conservative leadership of Jack Van Tongeren). Its National Coordinator was Eugene Donnini. [1]
The Australian Populist Movement published Stockade, a magazine which printed a wide range of articles, editorially supporting groups as diverse as the (British nationalist) Scorpion magazine, the (alternative environmentalist) Grass Roots magazine, the New South Wales Folk Federation, and the National Metal Unions. [2]
The APM advocated an anti-nuclear stance, pro-environmentalism, and a return to a restrictive immigration policy to ensure Australia's survival "as a European nation". They used the symbology of the Eureka flag, although it was a red version ("revolutionary red"?); and were critical of both capitalism and communism (and their interlocking financial operations). [3]
The Australian Populist Movement disbanded in early 1986.
